Square Enix have taken away some of the hype and momentum for the Final Fantasy VII remake by announcing it will be a “multi-part series” as opposed to a single game.
This is why I was only cautiously optimistic for this remake and refused to get aboard the hype train.
At the PlayStation Experience show, Square Enix said, “Final Fantasy VII Remake will be told across a multi-part series, with each entry providing its own unique experience.” Uh-huh.
According to producer Yoshinori Kitase and game director Tetsuya Nomura this was the plan from the very beginning, but only mentioned now and conveniently with very few details, and has been done because they can’t dedicate their time to a single release without having parts of the game/story summarised, other parts cut, and very few new parts added. Uh-huh.
Let’s get the positive out-of-the-way first. I’m looking forward to some of the new additions like being able to explore more of Midgar and yes the detail in the environments look absolutely amazing which I get takes up more time and space but with the size of blu-ray discs I’m sure they can handle it. If they can’t why not just make the game multi-disc, you know like the original Final Fantasy VII was, instead of making it a “multi-part series”?
The part that worries me is the stuff not said. How many parts or “episodes” will it be broken up into? How long will each part be? How long will there be between the release of each part? How much will each part cost?
All of the above are very important questions and if Square Enix were smart they would have released that information at the same as revealing it is going to be a “multi-part series”. Rip the bandage off in one go. Address people’s concerns and fears at the very start, don’t let them grow or rumour set in. It’d also give people a chance to budget.
I’m not a fan of this whole “multi-part series” or “episodic” style of games. There’s nothing worse than really getting into a game just to complete the episode and have to wait three months or whatever it is just for the next one to be released. That really kills the flow of the game. I want to play it at my pace.
Oh god they are going to break it up into 7 parts because it’s Final Fantasy VII aren’t they? If they did that and released one part every other month the game would be spread out over a year, with the last part released the same month as the first part, just the following year obviously.
Call me cynical (and many do) but this just seems like a cheap ploy by Square Enix to milk this remake for as much money as they possibly can. Which I suppose they should from a business standpoint, they are a business after all and their job is to make money, but that doesn’t mean I have to like it.
Oh well I guess we just have to wait until more information is released.
